lyrics
footsteps echo in the dark as I walk a solemn path
the only home you’ll ever know, spades against my back
walls dare not defy me, divine path straight and true
monuments, marble veins, carved to honor you
one last look, a final goodbye, all I ask in peace
surrender to a fate unknown, sweet release
and the hunger cries for more
one last night for this
yet the hunger begs for more
one last tainted kiss
as I plunge the blade, impatience; breaking precious skin
ever, deeper, and deeper still, in finding you again
to reach the door, your evermore; treasure in my eyes
a pathway to eternity and I shall not be denied
one last look, a final goodbye won’t ever be enough
surrender to emptiness, beg for another touch
and the hunger cries for more
one last night for this
yet the hunger begs for more
one last tainted kiss
envious of descending fog caressing sullen cheeks
ripples in the moment, steal the hours beneath
unearthing as a flower birthed of mortal sin
drawing back with fingers black the final shroud within
a final rest between us, stars shine in our eyes
why can’t this last forever, forever be my bride
and as the walls begin to crumble, unseen destiny
swallowed whole, embrace the cold for all eternity
and the hunger cries for more
one last night for this
yet the hunger begs for more
one last tainted kiss

I like the subtle way in which the tracks connect to the album cover, making this resting maiden the center point — calm in the midst of storm. (Just my interpretation maybe but the cover gives extra depth to the music... a softer undertone). The image reminds me of ‘Annunciation’ by Dante G. Rossetti used in ‘Adrenaline’ music video.
‘Smoke and Mirrors’ puts me at peace with big disappointments — a bittersweet musical potion.
